The planets in astrology can be observed through myriad frameworks, whether you consider them to be celestial bodies, mythological gods, collective archetypes, or cosmic frequencies. The common thread among these perspectives, though, is the concept that each planet represents a unique and fundamental facet of what it means to exist.

The moment we were born onto this planet, we became the embodiment of what was taking place in the zodiac at that precise second in time. It’s as if we are a snapshot of the placement of each planet and the Sun in the constellations.

As the planets move in our cosmos, something moves within us. Whether that takes the shape of mirroring our desires, bolstering our confidence, showing us the way we learn, or revealing our deepest fears, the planets inform us. They teach us. We are a cosmic design, each planet alive within us.

The Significance of Planets in Astrology

The planets are organized into four categories in astrology—the luminaries, personal planets, social planets, and transpersonal planets. Each category moves with a combined intention, whether developing the self, contributing to society, or becoming a vessel for collective evolution.

Luminaries: Sun & Moon

The word luminary comes from the Latin lumen, which translates to “light.” These are celestial bodies that either emit or reflect light—both literally and symbolically.

The Sun and Moon comprise the luminaries. They are the celestial light bearers, illuminating our path both inward and outward. These govern our essence and are core layers of our astrological makeup. Unlike the other planets, the luminaries do not orbit the Sun (one is the Sun and the other orbits the Earth) and are often placed in their own category for that reason alone.

Personal Planets: Mercury, Venus & Mars

Our first category of planets beyond the luminaries, the personal planets, includes Mercury, Venus and Mars. Each of these planets carries the label “personal” and moves with the same essential intention—to develop the individual self.

These three planets form the building blocks of personal identity and the vessel of selfhood through a stable, aware self. Before we can serve society (social planets) and surrender to the soul (transpersonal planets), we must first know ourselves as a self. This is the role of the personal planets. The higher consciousness of later planets can more easily flow through a more actualized self.

These planets move quickly through our cosmos, making them most noticeable in everyday life through their functioning to support the self.

Social Planets: Jupiter & Saturn

As we reach the social planets, comprising Jupiter and Saturn, we meet a bridge between the individual self and higher consciousness.

These two planets mature us and stretch us. They move with the purpose of integrating the individual into society and initiating us into a collective reality. This is where we begin to understand ourselves not only as individuals but as members of something larger—a community, a generation, a lineage, a culture, and a collective that we are here to nurture and receive nurturance from.

The social planets invite us to evolve not only for our own sake but for and with that of each other. Together, we exist as a larger, living whole.

Transpersonal Planets: Uranus, Neptune & Pluto

Anything beyond Saturn is unseen to the naked eye. Until the 18th century, it was the final known planet in our solar system. As we move beyond what is known by sight, we reach the transpersonal planets of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Here we move into the unseen realms and further extend ourselves beyond the individual self.

These three planets are the transcendent dimensions of the human experience, moving and guiding in service to all of existence. They invoke change and growth in consciousness, bridge us to higher wisdom and vaster truths, and are agents of collective evolution.

The transpersonal planets remind us of a deep truth that exists as a whisper in the center of our beings, a truth so quiet as to only be heard in moments of silence. This is the message that to exist as one’s truest self is to be in service to the all. These planets remind us of the sacred dimensions of life, with their profound medicine accessed through surrender and reverence.

Also referred to as generational planets, these bodies move slowly, sometimes spending decades in a sign and therefore defining entire generations.

What Each of the Planets in Astrology Mean

Our trajectory through the luminaries, personal planets, and social planets as a pathway to the transpersonal planets remind us that we cannot meet the transpersonal without the personal—we cannot pour into the collective, become agents of change, or truly serve this life without a well-defined concept of self.

But what does each planet mean in astrology?

The Sun symbol in astrology is believed by some to indicate a shield with an inner circle. It is also not too distanced from the ancient alchemical symbol for gold. (Illustration: Mariia Lov | Getty)

The Sun

Consciousness | Self | Purpose | Self-Expression

Rules Leo

Welcome to the core of your astrological make up. Although the Sun is not technically a planet, as it shifts in our cosmos, it alters the seasons of the Earth as well as the seasons of astrology. Depending on when you were born, your Sun expresses itself through a particular zodiac sign—revealing an essence, direction, and invitation that you are here to evolve into.

What does the Sun mean in astrology? It is our life force. It represents our sacred origin manifesteed as a singular, distinct, and individual self. It represents how creative life force uniquely expresses itself as—and through—each of us. It governs the intrinsic need within us to develop a sense of individuality—to become our own person, to live on purpose, to live as only we can do. It is the light of consciousness and defines our vitality and self-expression.

Our Sun sign is the self that we are continually evolving into. It is who we are, with our likes and dislikes, preferences, unique path, and long-term desires. As we move and live from our Sun sign, we cultivate greater vitality, creativity, confidence, self-awareness, sovereignty, personal authority, and purpose.

The Moon

Emotions | Intuition | Inner Needs | Belonging | Instinctual Self

Rules Cancer

Within each moment, we exist within two seemingly separate worlds—the world within and the world without. The world that lives personally, subjectively, and privately within, and the outer world that we share and create together.

While the Sun represents an outer expression and development of self, the Moon reflects our inner reality. This is the self that is often less shared. Kept closely by our hearts, it is vulnerable, soft, and receptive. It is the whisper of intuition and the reflective realm of emotions, memory, belonging, and our instinctual self. This part of ourselves governs our deepest inner needs, our foundational requirements for safety, and the fluctuations of our emotional tides.

Astrologically, the Moon represents both the mother and child archetypes. This side of us also represents our intuitive nature — the way our hearts whisper and guts advise, the way memories and wisdom continue through lineage living deep in our bodies, and the way we sense, feel, know the unspoken emotions both within and around us.

It also encompasses the ways in which we mother ourselves and the needs of a child.  As we attune deeper to our Moon sign, we  attune to our deepest needs and learn to recharge and nurture ourselves. Moving with our Moon invites emotional well-being, inner safety, intuitive knowing, and a deeper sense of belonging within ourselves. Spending time with our Moon means entering into a private conversation with our most heartfelt knowings.

The Mercury symbol in astrology is rumored to evoke the head and winged cap of a messenger in mythology although it more closely resembles a staff with two intertwined snakes which is traditionally associated with Mercury. (Illustration: Mariia Lov | Getty)

Mercury

Mental realms | Perception | Communication | Messenger | Learning

Rules Gemini & Virgo

Our quickest-moving planet, Mercury mirrors the speed of our minds—the speed of thought, neurons firing, mental imagery, ideas sparking, and words expressed. Astrologically, Mercury represents the way we mentally process the world around us. Mercury enables us to make sense of our reality, process information or events happening outside of us, and build frameworks to exist within this world

Often labelled the messenger of the gods, Mercury collects and disperses. Just as messengers were once believed to carry information among the realms of heavens, earth, and underworld, Mercury connects threads of information and turns ideas into possibilities. We need Mercury to communicate, to share information and ourselves with another. And we need Mercury to learn and grow. These are each fundamental to what it means to be a human in this world.

Mercury is not only our thoughts and perceptions, it is the reflective self-consciousness that observes the limitations of our thoughts and perspectives. It is also the ability to free ourselves by choosing new ones. Mercury is not only the messenger and the mind but the magician.

Some say the iconic Venus symbol in astrology, also the feminine symbol, represents a handheld mirror to capture the beauty brought by the goddess of all things related to love. (Illustration: Mariia Lov | Getty)

Venus

Love | Beauty | Goddess | Self-Worth | Pleasures | Art

Rules Taurus & Libra

While Mercury rules the mind, Venus brings us down into our bodies. She invites us into love and connection, sensuality, and beauty. She is the energy of receptivity, desire, and self-worth. The part of ourselves that remembers we are art, our bodies are sacred vessels, and pleasure is a way to healing.

There are two distinct expressions of the goddess Venus—that of the earth sign of Taurus and the air sign of Libra. As such, she rules both our relationship with ourselves and our relationships with others.

The expression of Venus through Taurus is concerned with the physical material world. It governs our relationship with ourselves—our sense of worth, self-love, and inner values. This side of the goddess supports our relationship with resources, the earth, abundance, sensuality, and our bodies.

Through Libra, Venus connects us with the world. She comes up into the realm of air as relates to communication, ideals, and social harmony. She supports our capacity for harmonizing, relating, connecting, and collaborating and oversees all our relationships, whether friendship, romantic, business, or anything in between.

The Venus within us all shapes and influences our relationship with our bodies, our worth, beauty, and harmony, as well as our relationship with love, abundance, art, desire, and attraction.

Known as the warrior planet, Mars is symbolized by the traditional sign for the masculine, said by some to represent the shield and sword of the god of war. (Illustration: Mariia Lov | Getty)

Mars

Fire | Movement | Action | Instinct | Assertion

Rules Aries

Whereas Venus is receptive, Mars is expressive. Whereas Venus magnetizes, Mars acts. Often represented as the warrior and the protector, Mars is the realm of physical movement, passion, personal drive, and courage. This planet is pure will. It desires to create, continue, grow, protect, build, achieve, and act. It is the fire within us all that says, I want, I choose, I create.

Ruling Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, Mars is fire and movement, passion and choice, instinct and assertion. Fire must move. If the Mars within us all isn’t expressed, it gets stuck—and so do we. Mars is not just force, it is sacred motion. It clears, energizes, and activates. It is the transformation that births itself from and into action.

Mars carries the purpose of awakening autonomy—our ability to assert our desires, follow our instincts, and move energy into form. It is the raw drive that propels souls into motion. With Mars, we learn to honor our individuality, take up space, and pursue what is ours to experience, build, and embody. It is the flame, the will, and the sacred force of becoming.

Depending on how you perceive it, the Jupiter symbol in astrology is either the initial letter of the name Zeus with a strike to indicate abbreviation or an eagle hieroglyph to indicate Jove, also known as the god Jupiter. (Illustration: Mariia Lov | Getty)

Jupiter

Expansion | Wisdom | Truth | Seeker | Teacher | Philosopher

Rules Sagittarius

The largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter has a physical presence that mirrors its archetypal energy and is all about vastness, expansion, and abundance. This planet expands whatever it touches—including us, lifting us beyond our limiting ideas and into greater possibilities. It is growth and expansion, wisdom and truth, the seeker and the teacher.

Here to support our growth, Jupiter looks ahead to the future, always asking us what is next. It invites us to trust in something greater, to find meaning within our experiences, and feel something larger guiding and supporting us. It is a planet of opportunity, faith, belief, and hope and invites us to step beyond the realm of current belief and perspective as we ponder vaster realities, question the higher workings of the Universe, and contemplate our place within it all.

This planet is a cosmic guide, welcoming us to explore our own truth, to build a personal cosmology, and experience our own relationship with whatever we deem sacred. Representing the higher mind, Jupiter is the philosopher within us all—considering life’s deeper meaning and sharing wisdom freely. It is the cosmic expander, visionary, sage, and great benefactor.

The Saturn symbol in astrology could be construed as a scythe although it may instead be based on the Greek kappa, the first letter of the word kronos, which means “time.” (Illustration: Mariia Lov | Getty)

Saturn

Structure | Time | Discipline | Sacred Responsibility | Legacy | Karma

Rules Capricorn

The final planet visible to the naked eye, Saturn marks the threshold between the seen and the unseen, the tangible and intangible. It rules our physical reality, the structures of life, the laws of time and space, and the boundaries that shape the human experience. And it is the sacred container through which the soul grounds itself into human form that eternally whispers, What will you do with the time you have been given? What will you leave behind?

As Saturn rules discipline, patience, resilience, commitment, limitation, effort, and integrity, it reminds us of an inherent truth living within us all. That is, we each hold a sacred responsibility to live truthfully and intentionally. Saturn is that sacred responsibility etched into self-mastery, legacy, and contributions that extend beyond our limited time. It is required to ground our visions and dreams into form and reality. It is the god of karma and the master builder.

Saturn is also our final social planet. Whereas Jupiter expands, Saturn refines. Whereas Jupiter dreams, Saturn builds. These two planets are the great initiators into adulthood, purpose, and aligned contributions to the collective. Together, the social planets expand and shape the self that has previously been formed through our luminaries and personal planets. These planets widen our container so that we can then meet Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto not as strangers, but as conduits for their vaster medicine. It is the sacred threshold.

Uranus

Evolution | Innovation | Breakthroughs | Disruptor | Agent of Freedom

Rules Aquarius

Discovered in 1781 amid social revolutions and scientific breakthroughs, Uranus entered our collective awareness at a time when humanity was challenging authority, expanding consciousness, and redefining possibility. The very discovery of Uranus shattered the existing foundations of our reality both scientifically and symbolically by doubling the known size of the solar system—and questioning our place in it—in a single moment.

The period of history in which Uranus was discovered and the disruption its discovery initiated mirrors the astrological force of this planetary body. Uranus is change and awakening, evolution and breakthrough, innovation and disruption.  Uranus cracks open the foundations held within the bounds of Saturn so that what is new, original, and evolutionary may begin to pour through.

Often known as the Great Awakener, Uranus shatters existing and stable patterns and structures—both personally and collectively—to create space for what is coming in next. Always moving with the purpose of freedom in mind, it is the Disruptor and the agent of freedom.

As we connect with Uranus, we connect with the part of ourselves that lives in the motion of evolution. We are all dancing our own dance across the threshold of Saturn and Uranus by preserving what has been and stabilizing ourselves while simultaneously reaching for what could be and breaking the rules we’ve outgrown. As we shatter old identities, we open to vaster aspects of ourselves, of life, and of potential.

Recognizable as a trident, the symbol for Neptune stands for the watery depths and dissolution of self captured by the ruling planet of Pisces. (Illusration Mariia Lov | Getty)

Neptune

Oneness | Mystic | Dreamer | Imagination | Intuition

Rules Pisces

Neptune is a portal into another realm. It is the doorway into the boundless, the infinite, and the timeless. As we reach Neptune, we reach into the sacred—and, in the process, remember that we are also the sacred.

Neptune’s evolutionary purpose is to dissolve the illusions of separation—to soften the structures that confine us and return us to the infinite. It invites us to dream, surrender, and merge with something greater, whether through silence, beauty, feeling, music, prayer, compassion, or art. It connects all things, including a reality beyond duality and separation, and reminds us of the oneness of all of life. It reminds us of an inner longing that mystics, poets, and artists have been speaking to for generations—the longing to merge with something larger, remember ourselves as one with all, and return to the sacredness from which we all emerge.

The sense of self developed through the earlier planets becomes blurred under this influence. The reason Neptune blurs the outer is so that we may remember the inner. It softens the edges of our identity so that we may remember we are so much more—we are the sacred in form. We are remembering a time, space, and reality in which there was no separate self. Neptune is dissolution and oneness, imagination and intuition, the mystic and the Doorway into the Sacred.

Pluto

Death | Rebirth | Alchemy | God of the Underworld

Rules: Scorpio

Mythologically, Pluto is the guide to the underworld also known as Hades, a Greek name meaning “unseen.” This planet represents the unseen depths of self that are often less traveled. It is the mystery and the underworld that exists within each of us. It is transformation embodied, the force both within and without that cracks us open so that something more truthful, more whole, more real can emerge.

Penetrating layers of the self that lurk beneath the surface, Pluto arrives when we are ready to meet more of ourselves. It connects us to those aspects that are lost to fear, shame, repression, and the unconscious so that we may reclaim ourselves, piece by piece, layer by layer. As we access more of ourselves, we free the life force previously tied up in these spaces. In the process, we also reclaim our power. What awaits us on the other side?

Pluto also brings our awareness to all that seemingly holds power over us—both collectively and individually—so that we may remember the truth of true power and reclaim ourselves in the process. As such, it represents the soul’s deepest evolutionary desires.

In evolutionary astrology, our final astrological planet acts as the tension and threshold between who we’ve been and who we are becoming.  It speaks to wounds and fears brought into this lifetime, the psychological death and rebirth required for evolution. It shows us the areas of life or self that we are here to transform and evolve through. It is death, rebirth, transformation, power, and the soul’s path of evolution.
