Reflexology, a holistic practice involving specific pressure points on the feet, hands, or face, offers numerous benefits. There is a lot of miscommunication around when it is and is not safe to receive reflexology, so this blog post will give an idea of when Reflexology absolutely cannot go forward. I will do blog posts around other times caution with reflexology may be needed, however for now I’ll share how certain severe conditions and circumstances warrant complete avoidance of this therapy.
Severe Cellulitis
Severe cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, is a contraindication for Reflexology. This is because direct manipulation of affected areas might exacerbate the condition and hinder the healing process.
Contagious or Notifiable Diseases
Any contagious foot condition, like athlete’s foot, or notifiable diseases should be fully treated before considering reflexology. This is to prevent any possible transmission between clients. As such, I advise avoiding Reflexology until contagious phases have passed.
Drugs or Alcohol Misuse
Reflexology involves relaxation and focus. In cases of significant drugs or alcohol misuse, this altered state of consciousness might interfere with the intended benefits of the therapy.
Imminent Medical Test/Procedure
Prior to any medical test or procedure, especially those involving the feet or legs, refraining from reflexology is recommended. This is because Reflexology might influence test results or interfere with procedures. This is dependant on the test or procedure, so you can contact me here if you are not sure.
Thrombosis/DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
Individuals with a recent history of thrombosis or active DVT should avoid reflexology. Deep pressure techniques might pose a risk, potentially dislodging clots or causing complications.
Prioritizing safety and well-being is paramount when considering reflexology. By being aware of these conditions, one can ensure that reflexology is both safe and suitable for their health circumstances. If you are ever unsure if you can receive reflexology please do get in touch here.
