Otherwise known as Pluto retrograde, our backward spin through the underworld has just begun. Although Pluto retrograde draws much less airtime and fewer memes on social than Mercury retrograde, its invitations are equally influential and deserving of attention. Consider this time a dance with our own evolution, a reclamation of our shadow side, and a return to the depths of our own becoming.
When is Pluto Retrograde?
Pluto retrograde will take place from May 6 to October 15, 2026. Each year, Pluto retrogrades for anywhere from five to six months.
What Does Pluto Mean in Astrology?
In the study of astrology, it has been theorized that as we look to planets farthest away from the Earth, the invitations and frequencies of these planets become more complex, misunderstood, mysterious, and subtle. Pluto, sitting at the edge of our known solar system, is no exception.
Pluto sits beyond the asteroid belt and is considered an outer planet. Whereas the inner planets of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are fast moving and frequently shifting between signs, the outer planets are much slower in motion. Their transits represent months, if not years, of our lives. When we connect with the movements of the outer planets—which include Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—we connect with larger chapters of our life. When they move, we feel the shift deeply. When they transition, we initiate an entirely new era.
Named after the Roman god of the underworld, Pluto’s influence cannot be fully grasped with the conscious mind. Pluto represents the unseen, the mysterious, and the hidden aspects of self and humanity. It is what exists within us that is not often explored, including our shadows, darkness, and vulnerabilities. It is unconsciousness and power, death and transformation.
Due to its slow movement, Pluto stays in a single sign of the zodiac for up to 21 years. The planet recently underwent an era-defining shift from Capricorn to Aquarius. It was a moment in time during which we, too, found ourselves seemingly straddling two worlds—the old and the new. Pluto’s continued exploration of Aquarius will define an era that lasts until 2043, and Pluto retrograde is an integral part of the dance.
What Does Pluto Retrograde Mean for You?
Retrogrades in astrology represent “re” words, such as review, revise, reconsider, realign, revisit, and so on. They constitute the step backward that allows for many steps forward. They create a sacred pause that creates space for us to look around, review who we are and the direction we are walking, integrate our past experiences, and bring closure to whatever needs it.
Retrogrades remind us that, no matter how we try, that life is not linear. Our journey is cyclic. We move sideways, upside-down, and every other direction possible in our outer and inner worlds. This is especially so under the influence of Pluto.
The backward trajectory of this outer planet brings the kind of cracking open that brings change to the foundation of who we are. Pluto journeys through our underworld, our psyche, our unconscious, our emotional body. Pluto excavates. It brings to light. Pluto retrograde, then, shows us what is hidden within us and waiting for our acceptance, presence, healing, and closure.
Throughout Pluto retrograde, we tend to experience a resurfacing of what we have labeled “old” emotions, stories, or hurts. It is within the experiences where we have previously felt powerless or imprisoned within ourselves that Pluto invites empowerment. and liberation. And it is through cracking open from within that Pluto welcomes light into dark spaces.
Pluto represents aspects of humanity that, for many, are uncomfortable. To journey through one’s inner shadow and face what sits within the discarded parts of us isn’t easy. It is necessary, however. And it is deeply healing. Pluto is the missing piece of the puzzle that brings us home to the entirety of our human experience.
Pluto Retrograde Meaning for Your Sign
This retrograde asks us to remain present and vulnerable while it reveals what lies underneath your many layers. The intention behind it is to witness parts of yourself that you have disowned and cast into the shadows. In turn, that supports accepting and reclaiming your true and evolving self.
As Pluto begins its retrograde, allow the cyclical journey of your becoming to be what it is. Pluto exists in the realms beyond your control, beyond your grasping. Your role is to allow your humanness to be as messy as it desires for this time. You are quite literally taking a step back, picking apart the pieces, making a mess, and surrendering as you attempt to place things back together in a way that is aligned, empowering, freeing, and real before you can find forward momentum. Here you revisit what is ready to be transformed. Although transformation is rarely easy, it is tremendously rewarding.
If old stories, wounds, or fears present themselves to you throughout this time, give yourself grace. How can you befriend this part of you? What is waiting on the other side of this pain? What would it feel like to descend into it? What does this part of you need? How can you create safety while you experience this? Read for your rising sign.
Aries Rising
This retrograde lingers with questions of belonging. Where does the experience of belonging arise from? And where have you been seeking to find it? You are being asked to review if belonging has been associated with sameness, whether you have abandoned yourself for the purpose of fitting in, and which connections and communities ring true with feelings of alignment and empowerment.
Taurus Rising
It’s a retrograde seeking empowerment. Empowerment in the way you look ahead at your future. Empowerment in the way you devote yourself to building your vision. And empowerment in the way you lead yourself through life. It’s an exploration of any pressures, outdated expectations, or other obstacles within your unconscious that do not belong yet are still shaping your trajectory.
Gemini Rising
This is a retrograde that delves into the perspectives, beliefs, and worldviews that shape your life and color your experiences. It asks you to reclaim the foundational lens through which you view, think, move, create, and express. Consider what words and patterns, experiences and directions were never yours to begin with and instead let yourself reconnect with your own inner compass and relationship with existence.
Cancer Rising
It’s an internal retrograde that aligns with your inward awareness. It asks for honesty, feeling, and the kind of intimacy with yourself that you have been taught to dismiss, regret, hide, and abandon. All of you deserves acceptance and reclamation, and all of you deserves to be invited into the wholeness that is you. This retrograde wants to remind you of that.
Leo Rising
Relationship patterns, fears of the heart, selfhood, and identity—these are your themes throughout Pluto retrograde. Consider it a mirror for all that exists within—conscious and unconscious—and shapes the way you connect with others. It’s also reflecting back to you the parts of yourself that have learned to merge, adapt, or disappear in order to stay connected. This time is a reclamation of self, a reorienting of your affection, and a rebalancing of shared connections.
Virgo Rising
It’s a retrograde that supports clearing the noise. That can feel like coming home to your own frequency, direction, truth, and belonging. As you begin to untangle from the rhythm, expectations, and voices of the world that take you farther away from your heart, you’ll find it easier to reshape your days based on truth. Your truth. Let yourself return to whatever fundamentals reconnect you with yourself.
Libra Rising
This retrograde is a clearing and cleansing, a returning and renewing. Think of the unique frequency that you are. Then consider how everywhere you have been taught you a slightly different way to reshape, dismiss, dim, and contort yourself for the purpose of peace, belonging, acceptance, and safety. Everywhere the noise of others has taken you away from your own life force, creativity, and expression, Pluto wants to restore the true you.
Scorpio Rising
Pluto retrograde asks you to move backward in time. Not to abandon the present. But to observe the past experiences, patterns, emotions, and narratives that are continuing to shape your present. It brings you back to your formative years, when truth was openly inherited from others, so you may become aware of and clear whatever is no longer aligned for you. As you do so, you rewrite the very foundation from which your life unfolds.
Sagittarius Rising
It’s a retrograde of the mind. Of awareness. Of inner-narratives and thought patterns. It’s a retrograde inviting you to remember that you have a say in whatever exists within the realm of your mind. You have a say in the way your inner voice speaks. You have creative direction in the way your perception shapes your experience of life. Remember the power within your voice and your thoughts.
Capricorn Rising
Worthiness, embodiment, and safety. Beauty, money, and desire. Have your relationships with these experiences been outsourced to the world around you? Where are they still shaped by the voice of the collective, of family, of friends, and of colleagues? This retrograde mirrors an awareness of where you are ready to reclaim the way you embody your value, feel safe, and claim your beauty.
Aquarius Rising
It’s your retrograde. As Pluto navigates your sign, it holds sway over your awareness. Let it act as a mirror, reflecting every experience, voice, pattern, fear, and truth that shapes the way you see yourself and, by extension, how you move through this world. What you’re worthy of and where you need to hide, how you express and how you fit in all come to the surface. Whatever shows up in that mirror that isn’t yours, cast aside to create more space for you.
Pisces Rising
It’s a retrograde that moves beneath the surface in your unconscious, in your dreams, in your intuition, and in the collective psyche. It invites spaciousness and time in silence. It proffers the medicine of solitude. And it brings a clearing in your underworld. Let yourself feel it without needing to understand it.
