You might have heard about the word reflexology from the elders at home. Your mom or dad might even be fanatics of it that they have it every week. You may also be into reflexology as most people you know have it and like it too. But what really is reflexology? Why is it good for the body and why do most people recommend it? Here are six (6) things you did not know about reflexology:
- It is also known as Zone Therapy.
Our body is said to be divided into ten (10) zones. There are five (5) zones on each side of the body – the left and the right. Reflexology is the applying of pressure on these zones in order to improve the body’s condition. It is one of the oldest forms of natural treatment and is based on the application of pressure.
- The theory was introduced by an E.N.T. doctor.
Dr. William H. Fitzgerald introduced the idea of reflexology in 1915. Back then it was known as ‘Zone Therapy’. Dr. Fitzgerald discovered the idea even if it was outside of his specialization as he was an ear, nose and throat specialist.
- Reflexology is never painful.
Most people feel pain when having reflexology. It should not be painful. If there is pain, it could be because the reflexologist is working outside your comfort zone. Always address this to whoever is working with you.
- It is different from foot massage.
While it may look similar to most people, foot massage and reflexology are two different things. For one, with foot massage, gentle strokes are applied to the entire feet with a massage oil or lotion. On the other hand, reflexology is applying certain pressure on specific points that correspond to an organ or body part to promote healing.
- It is a complementary therapy.
Complementary therapies are types of therapies that are included in care plans for people who are terminally sick that treat the whole person, the whole body, and not just the specific symptoms of the disease. It is said that a number of cancer patients turn to reflexology as a complementary therapy. But, reflexology should not be considered as an alternate to medicine or therapies prescribed.
- It usually lasts from 45 – 60 minutes.
For a great reflexology session, it must last from 45 – to 60 minutes the least but not more than two (2) hours.
