You don’t have to (____) to be a yogi!
by Editor-In-Cheif Virginia Norman, from the Winter 2024 Issues of Christian Yoga Magazine.
- You don’t have to have a particular body “type.”
Contrary to popular belief, there is no ideal “yoga body.” Anybody with breath in it can benefit from yoga, regardless of size or shape. This applies to the differently abled, as well. Innumerable modifications can be made for practitioners.
- You don’t have to be flexible.
“I’m not flexible” is arguably the most common reason people believe they can’t do yoga. Increased flexibility is one of many benefits of yoga, but it is not required. Even the most “inflexible” can expect improvements in flexibility with consistent practice.
- You don’t have to be a vegetarian/vegan.
While many yogis practice vegetarianism or veganism, this is not a yoga requirement. Some people practice eating this way for health reasons, others for spiritual or ethical reasons, but the choice belongs to the individual. Yogis eat a wide variety of diets depending on their individual needs.
