Mindfulness from a Christian Clinical Perspective

by Gillian Sapp, MSW, LSW (Livewellnesscenter.com)

Many of us are on a spiritual journey concerning our Christian faith. We all have questions regarding spiritual practices, and how to integrate our earthly selves into a spiritual realm. Maybe you wonder about the term “mindfulness” and how Christians can practice this without concerning themselves with idols. Let’s explore what we know about God, and discover how we can use this clinical concept faithfully.

“Mindfulness” and “meditation” are often associated with “emptying our minds.” While this can be peaceful, it’s not a method mentioned in The Bible as a way to engage with God. Maybe you hadn’t thought of this before, and maybe you value stillness. Paul wrote in Philippians to the Christian Church saying “Fill your mind with things that are good and that deserve praise” (Philippians 4:8, GNT).
