June’s Strawberry Moon

In ancient times, different groups of people used seasonal terms to name celestial happenings. June’s full moon, the Strawberry Moon, was named after delicious strawberries that often grew wild. Algonquin and European people applied this name to the last full moon of Spring or the first full moon of Summer, to indicate the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that were soon to be gathered.

The Tlingit and Cree named June’s moon the Egg Laying Moon and the Birth Moon. They recognized this month as a time of new life in many aspects of Nature. While eggs hatch and animals are birthed, life reaches its peak of perfection. Grasses turn a deep shade of green, waters flow with abundance, early fruits ripen, and the sun’s rays bring a playful, joyful spirit to all who inhabit our planet.

Each month, the moon reaches its peak brightness on the night of the full moon. The Strawberry Moon will reach peak illumination on Saturday, June 3 at 11:42 pm EST.
