You know her as the emotive soundtrack of your twenties or thirties or teens, the voice that you would scream to—or, more accurately, scream-cry to—as you worked through all the feels. Well, Alanis Morissette is back. And she’s here to help you process emotions a little differently this time. Now, she wants to help you work through them with meditation music.
Yes, Alanis Morissette is releasing a meditation album
The hit singer and genius behind the Broadway smash Jagged Little Pill recently announced her upcoming meditation album named Storm Before the Calm. On Instagram (where she also appears to be a Yoga Journal follower!), she explained the thinking behind her newest venture, which releases on June 17. In her post, she explains, “All I knew was that I wanted to write a record that would offer something, and throughout the process of creating it with Dave Harrington—beautifully and mercifully—it became its own multi-layered life raft during a time where I felt like I might disappear and float away.”
She says she strove to offer something of the same to us—music with a calm sound to comfort us on our own journeys. She aims to have the album be a respite of sorts, a safe space to experience emotions in whatever shape they appear. That means we’ll all interpret her music in different ways—Morissette is OK with that. To her, all of the emotions can—and should—be felt while listening to this record. “Whether it be relaxation or resting or releasing or emboldening or sweaty wildness or embodying or empowering or clarifying,” she explains in her post. (We love that.)
While Morissette’s meditation album may appear random, it’s not a complete surprise. In 1998, she released the song “Thank U,” in which she taps into the metaphysical by praising silence, nothingness, and clarity, among many, many other things. Remember singing along to that?
Where can I listen to Alanis Morissette’s meditation album?
In addition to releasing her meditation album on all the expected platforms, Morissette plans to debut it on Calm through a partnership with the popular meditation app. When that happens, you’ll be able to wake up with Morissette and drift off to sleep with Harry Styles and Regé-Jean Page.
In her Instagram post, Morissette offers a teaser by releasing the record’s first track, an 11-minute song titled “Safety—Empath in Paradise.” If you’re into meditating, consider it as incentive to sit down to a 10-minute meditation session. Afterward, you can technically say you meditated with Morissette.
